The Age of Reason
After the Renaissance a period known as the Age of Reason or the Enlightenment came about. This era appeared in the 1600's all the way up to the 1700's in which affected the western civilization.in particular and transformed the philosophies and ideas of the world then and that to come. Specifically, human ability to reason was glorified and therefore, many scholars, writers, and scientists became known and recognized for their bold new ideas and focus on science and reason as the answer to all problems rather than spirituality and human emotion. During this time of illumination; a lean into rational thought, many important figures rose up and influenced various aspects of science, society, and particularly, literature. Francis Baken and Rene decartes were considered the fathers of the enlightment. Baken believed that science could relieve people from ignorance. Renai was big in mathamatics. Their ideas inspired others with more ideas. The study of elictricity, chemistry and biology developed also.
Analyzing Satire in Political Cartoons
Here is a political cartoon of student loans written by Guy & Rodd & Dan. This cartoon involves the amount of debt college students are put into after attending college and deploys a number of devices to convey its meaning. The tone in this political cartoon can be seen as an excited tone because she has just won the lottery worth a billion dollars, but is quickly reversed into a dreadful sigh when Miss Betsy realizes she still has all her student loans to payoff. Another device used in the cartoon is situational irony in that receiving the billion dollars should be the greatest day of Miss. Betsy’s life. She could buy almost everything her little heart desires, but that thought is quickly ruined when she remembers that all that money cannot go to the items she would like to buy but would have to go to all of her debt from her college expenses. The billion dollars Miss Betsy received is viewed as a hyperbole because it is a huge exaggeration on how big your school loans will be, but it gives the audience an example on how she feels about having to pay for all her college education. The theme to this political cartoon is that the cost of a college education is becoming ridiculously high and is putting students in debt before they even begin their working life. Today many students that attend college are in the hole before they can even get a job forcing them to have a huge bill to pay and will lead them to be paying for quite some years after attending the college or university they attended.
Two Great Philosopher's of the Enlightenment: Hobbes vs. Locke
The following presentation that my group and I organized is on contrasting ideas of the 17-18th century philosophers Thomas Hobbes and John Locke. In our power point we bring to the subject exact and on point, both men basically sought to promote the ideas of establishing true success, peace, and protection from conflict for society as a whole. Thomas Hobbes believed humans were naturally evil and selfish, therefor they were very dependent. John Locke on the other hand believed people were very capable of being independent, trustworthy, and reasonable.

Oprah Winfrey Show: "Corruption on 21st Century Teens" with our Guests Mr. John Locke and Thomas Hobbes
|
The theme we are presenting in this video is that society seems to possess a very negative, corrupted view of many subjects, specifically those involving teenagers of the century. By portraying this truth as a problem that really needs fixing, we are attempting to point out how society wastes too much time fretting over unnecessary things, particularly how the media influences such things, and instead what really needs attention are the real conflicts like drug addiction, teen pregnancy, and true corruption in the minds of teenagers. With this comes the truth that many teenagers, in reality, while they may not be perfect and as respectful and hardworking as the past generations, are decent human beings with much potential to be outstanding adults. Even though they may have faults, they should not be judged, harassed, and criticized for unnecessary things.

Throughout the video, especially during the actual interview of the two philosophers, the tone is mock-serious as “Oprah Winfrey” presents the horrible reality of teenage lives and actions. This tone works perfectly to portray the theme of the work because while it seems as if the crimes committed by the teens are very evil and devastating, the tone is actually mocking at the truth that the crimes are not crimes at all but actual ordinary things that many commit on a daily basis. The mock devastation also portrayed by Oprah, the narrator, and Thomas Hobbes points out the fact that society takes the little things too seriously just to get attention, as in the case with social media, and instead ignores the real problems in our world. These two mocking tones come together to give the video a sense of humorous irony, therefore making the piece a comedy.
In this movie, the crimes committed by the kids are exaggerated. The two delinquents are put in jail for inadequate reasons like not doing homework, talking back, and quitting band. Instead, real crimes would be those like driving under the influence, having possession of drugs, or committing murder. The punishments received for these “crimes”, like Latisha spending a lifetime in prison just for driving without a license, are also exaggerated. The two philosophers also exaggerate the corrupt qualities and actions of teenagers. Hobbes goes overboard by stating that teenagers are so evil and with so much power, they will eventually take over the world, especially with the help of their dangerous weapons the computer and the cell phone. John Locke as well goes overboard through his opinions that children should have all the freedom possible and should be able to do whatever they wish, whether it be offensive, violent, or a felony.
The dramatic irony in this video is presented through one, the society existent in Oprah’s world. They believe stealing free water and dumping water on a tree of all places is a high degree felony when we know for a fact that it isn’t wrong at all. Also ironic in the video is that Hobbes thinks computers and phones are deadly weapons when we the audience can be assured that they are safe gadgets used for the convenience of leisure activity. Also involving Mr. Hobbes, as he is getting arrested for the exact ideas that he proposed himself; the power of authorities to govern citizens, and the inability of ordinary individuals to have the power to do whatever they please; it is ironic that he does not realize the justification of being taken into custody nor does he recall the discussion he had previously on the show, but instead declares rights and the power to state his opinions on the matter.
Socratic irony is hinted in this piece of work, first, when Oprah states that it is wonderful that the two philosophers could take time away from judging and criticizing the world to spend that moment with her. She is mocking them underneath as being hypocritical, unfair individuals. Towards the last part of the show, Oprah makes it seem as if it is a great thing to have Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus on the show next week when actually the creators of the video are attempting to point out how bad they are as role models and how the topics that they are to discuss are horrific and devastating.
Essentially, the social problem that our video is attempting to solve is society’s judgmental, unjust attributes. We are attempting to cure how society focuses on the unimportant things instead of attempting to solve the truly endangering situations. With a sense of irony and satire,we are striving to portray and fix the corruption of thinking that our world possesses greatly.
